Dear Reader,

As we enter the 40 day Nativity fast I want to ask my Brothers and Sisters in Christ to maintain vigilance and to keep an eye on each other (and me): correct each other out of love as we fast, and remember; ‘What good is it if we fast, but bite and devour our brothers and sisters?’ – John Chrysostom.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: please, if you’re Repentant, stop defending your past. We often say that we are Repentant (to feel sorrow at past actions, conduct and Sins), yet we defend those parts of our past as if they were justified. They are not. To Repent is to actually feel sorrow for our conduct because we admit it is sinful and unjust: We confess our sin.

In Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Mystagogic Catechesis 2: Concerning Baptism, he speaks about Lot’s Wife, who having escaped the Evil and Sinful city of Sodom, turned back and was destroyed for her disobedience of the Lord (Genesis 19:26). In Luke 17:28-33 the Lord tell us to remember Lot’s Wife as an example of what happens when we turn our back on the Lord and return to our Sinful past. After Baptism we are called to our Saving work, to let the dead and old man alone, and to get on as the new man (Colossians 3:1-11), for the Lord says: ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God’ (Luke 9:62). Remember these words dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, and do not turn back to your old ways: ‘For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptised into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise’ (Galatians 3:26-29).

To the Reader:
Have a Blessed day and may God Bless you and your Family over this Nativity Fast.
